St. Vitus Treasure - newly opened permanent exhibition at Prague Castle

President Vaclav Klaus and Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka opened a new permanent exhibition of the St Vitus treasure, one of the largest cathedral treasures in Europe, at Prague Castle. The exhibition presents 139 reliquaries and liturgical objects of high historical and artistic value.

After many years, the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the 2nd courtyard of the Prague Castle will once again house a permanent exhibition featuring the Treasure of St. Vitus. The history of this Treasure which dates back to St Wenceslas (907-935), the patron saint of the Czech state, returned to the Holy Rood Chapel after 21 years. The treasure was displayed in the chapel in 1961-1990. Then the chapel was closed for years for security reasons and inconvenient conditions. It underwent a thorough reconstruction in the past three years.

The value of the treasure is not only historical - the artefacts and objects used during masses hold great liturgical value, in addition to the craftsmanship and quality of the precious stones and metals, which is priceless.

The collections include holy relics, chalices, monstrances and other liturgical items, as well as panel paintings and old textiles. One of the most valuable exhibits is a reliquary cross that Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Roman Emperor, had made in the 14th century.

The Czech king and Roman Emperor Charles IV was the most famous donor. In 1333, before he became the Czech king, he expanded the Treasure and later introduced it into public masses which enabled average citizens to regularly view some of the items in it.

The Exhibition was prepared by the Prague Castle Administration, the Office of the Czech President and the St. Wenceslas Metropolitan Chapter which will showcase the 139 reliquaries and liturgical items of priceless historical and artistic value.

The number of visitors to the Holy Rood Chapel to see the St Vitus treasure will be limited to 45 at a time. The entrance fee will be 300 crowns and a family ticket will cost 600 crowns.

Mercatini di Natale a Praga dal 26.11.2011 al 1.1.2012

I piu grandi mercati di Natale nella Repubblica Ceca sono qui. Tradizionalmente la Piazza di Città Vecchia e Piazza Venceslao, porteranno al centro della città un clima di festa. Nella Piazza della Città Vecchia si svolgerà il mercato di Natale dal 26 Novembre 2011 al 1 Gennaio 2012. Albero di Natale in Piazza della Città Vecchia si accende per la prima volta il 26 Novembre, alle ore 18:00. Tra i palazzi gotici, rinascimentali e barocchi, in un'atmosfera intima e fiabesca, sotto un grande albero di Natale illuminato da migliaia di luci, le 150 casette di legno dei mercanti si dispongono a forma di stella intorno alla statua di Jan Hus.

In Piazza Venceslao il mercato festivo inizierà il 26 Novembre 2011 e si concluderà il 1 Gennaio 2012. In piazza San Venceslao, chiamata Piccoli Champs-élysées per la somiglianza con la famosa strada di Parigi, le casette sono a ridosso dell'edificio neorinascimentale del Museo Nazionale. Accanto ai classici decori natalizi, ai giocattoli natalizi, alle candele profumate e all'oreficeria artigianale si trovano i preziosi cristalli boemi.
Negli stand gastronomici si possono assaggiare pannocchie arrostite, peéena klobasa (salsiccie alla griglia), del pernièky (panpepato al miele), delle peéena kastany (caldarroste) o dei vanoèni cukrovi (biscotti natalizi). Per scaldarsi si può sorseggiare un po' di svrené vino o svarak (vin brulè), del horky punè (punch bollente) o un bicchiere di medovina (idromele).

Celebrazioni natalizie a Praga saranno anche quest'anno di spirito e delle tradizioni della vera atmosfera della tradizione natalizia ceca. E che cosa ci si può aspettare? Programma di quest'anno oltre a musicisti cechi arrichiscono anche i musicisti provenienti dall'estero. Gli amanti dei tradizionali canti natalizi saranno sicuramente felici di ascoltare i cori di bambini provenienti da tutto il paese. Sarà inoltre possibile degustare prelibatezze tradizionali di Natale da altre parti d'Europa.
I visitatori potranno acquistare piccoli regali di Natale e non solo questi. I venditori offrono anche decorazioni, candele, vischio, corone d'avvento e candele, e molto altro.

Ma Mercatini di Natale degli ultimi due anni non si svolgono solo nella Città Vecchia e Piazza Venceslao. Ci sono anche i mercati Andel, piazza Palacky, o piazza Jiriho z Podebrad. I prezzi in questi mercati sono più bassi, ci sono molto meno persone e pochissimi turisti.

Open Doors Day on 28th October 2011

On anniversary of the establishment of the Republic, we would like to invite you to upcoming Open Doors Day. On Friday, October 28th, visitors will have a unique opportunity to see places which are otherwise not open to the public.


Open Doors Day at Municipal House ( Obecni dum )

Here, on 28th October 1918, the National Committee ceremonially declared Czechoslovakian independence with a manifesto for the nation. It was a day that shaped Czech history. The Municipal House is justifiably proud of its past and celebrates the National Holiday with an Open Day.

This year, on anniversary of the establishment of the Republic, the Municipal House once again opens its prestigious premises to the general public. Prague residents and visitors to the Capital therefore have an opportunity to view the unique Art Nouveau interior of this National Cultural Monument. The tour of the building will take in all the exquisite halls on the 1st floor: through Smetana Hall, Patisserie, Moravian Slovak Salon, Božena Němcová Salon, Oriental Salon, Grégr Hall, and Palacký Hall to Mayor’s Hall, the artistic decoration of which was the highly esteemed work of world-famous Alfons Mucha.
Other artists who contributed to the decoration of the Municipal House include painters Mikoláš Aleš, Jan Preisler, Max Švabinský, František Ženíšek, sculptors Josef Václav Myslbek and Ladislav Šaloun. The exquisite interior of the Municipal House will be open to the public on 28th October from 9am to 3pm.

The one and only exhibition officially approved by ABBA!

The glamour and glitz tour of ABBAWORLD, the spectacular multimedia exhibition show, continues. After London, Melbourne, Sydney and Györ in Hungary, the next stop on the calendar is Prague. The members of ABBA are happy to see ABBAWORLD arrive in the blooming capital of the Czech Republic in springtime.

”ABBAWORLD is going places where we never had a chance to play when we were still active as a group and that’s great!” says Bjorn. “We wish all visitors a happy experience.”

The exhibition, which will premiere on 6 May 2011 at Slovansky Dum in the centre of the Czech capital, is presented by Sony Music Prague, in cooperation with Viva Art Music.

”We are looking forward to this exhibition with great excitement,” says Zbynek Knobloch, managing director of Sony Music Entertainment Czech Republic. ”This is an exhibition that allows the visitors to engage and interact in ways that we never thought possible a few years ago.”

The exhibition of prehistoric animals from Ice - age shows models of this animals in life size. You can see them in the prague exhibition area Výstaviště,

in Holešovice district. You will see the collection of eleven the most impressive prehistoric animals. All of them had lived together with humans - mammoths, glyptodonts, cavebears, sloths... Come and see all of them by your own eyeball!

Exhibition Beatlemania - untill 10.1.2011

Good news for Beatles fans – a new exhibition at the Czech Museum of Music opens, featuring the music and the men – the museum’s even borrowed George Harrison’s banjo, one of John Lennon’s shoes, and lots more Beatles memorabilia.

The exhibition’s highly interactive however - there’s even a little recording studio where you can try belting out Beatles songs.

The exhibition will include original Madame Tussaud waxworks. The exhibition in Prague will recognize the influence The Beatles in general, and John Lennon in particular, had on the Czech nation and it’s youth culture.

Lennon’s 1968 songs Revolution, became the underground symbol of Prague’s youth culture in their peaceful revolt against the Communist state. Despite any impression given by their 1968 song "Back in the U.S.S.R.," the Beatles never made it behind the Iron Curtain in the 1960s, but that doesn't mean they didn't influence Czech youth of that, and successive, generations.

"Under communism, young people were really attracted to Western culture, to everything that was coming from the other side of the Iron Curtain," said Veronika Seidlová, co-curator of the forthcoming "Beatlemania!" exhibition at the Czech Museum of Music. "The Beatles were an icon of this fascination with the West."

The exhibition launches June 4 and runs through early next year. It gathers Fab Four memorabilia and tracks the band's general history along with focusing on the influence the band, and its members, have had in the Czech Republic.

"Our aim with this exhibition is to try to get close to the people who want to remember those times," Seidlová said. "Men and women who were young then, wearing long hair and were kind of persecuted by the older generations."

After the 1980 murder of John Lennon, a spontaneous tribute to the musician began in Prague, where people started writing and painting on a Malá Strana wall. It eventually became a symbol of protest against the communist regime. The wall remains and is known as the Lennon Wall, located just around the corner from the museum.

"John Lennon is still an icon of peace, and the Beatles' music gave people the confidence and desire to express their own emotions and desire for peace," said Clare Ireland, general manager of The Beatles Story, a museum based in Liverpool that collaborated with the Czech Museum of Music on the exhibition.

The displays, of course, also go beyond the band's influence in the Czech Republic and track their evolution more generally.

Lifesize wax statues of the band originally from a Madame Tussaud's exhibition will be on display. The Beatles were measured for the statues in March 1964, in the midst of filming A Hard Day's Night. "To add to their authenticity, the waxworks wear suits designed and tailored by Dougie Millings, who was their favorite tailor at the time," Ireland said. The statues are insured for 250.000, making them the most valuable objects in the exhibition. Also on hand is an original gold-plated banjolele (half-banjo, half-ukulele) formerly owned by George Harrison.

"It's difficult to place a value on Beatles memorabilia, as it's all an important part of history," Ireland said.

Seidlová also says the exhibition will track the breakup of the band and the post-1970 solo careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo. She says the controversial components of the band's breakup - like Yoko Ono - are included.

Around 4.5 billion years ago the Earth came into existence and it is our home today, old but still very much alive, constantly metamorphosing, bearing the only known life in the universe. What was its birth like?

What does the planet look like inside? How did life happen to evolve in such immense diversity? ... Just a few of the many questions our exhibition helps answer.

Through unique specimens, models and a selection of what we call “toys” you can investigate the Earth in a different way than your everyday experience, books or movies. Let us escort you through a volcano experiencing an earthquake, around a Devonian tropical reef or through a Carboniferous forest. You can also meet a skeleton of the giant dinosaur Amargasaurus or the well known Australopithecus “Lucy”. Come and explore the story of Earth from its very beginning through the present human age. When leaving the show-rooms, we hope you will take with you an even greater appreciation of the Earth than before.

I mercati di Pasqua a Praga sulla Piazza di Citta Vecchia e Piazza di San Venceslao contano piu di 100 posti di vendita. Da vedere c´e una vasta scelta di merci artigianali, comprendente giocattoli di legno, vetri di cristallo, candeline, gioielleria, oggetti in metallo, ricami intricati, marionette e bambole in costumi regionali. L´articolo piu comune e l´uovo di Pasqua dipinto a mano, allegramente colorato. Le donne ceche, vestite molto bene in costumi tradizionali, personalizzano le uova di Pasqua dipingendo su il vostro nome oppure un messaggio speciale. La Pasqua a Praga è un periodo di grandi feste e tradizioni legati indissolubilmente all’arrivo della Primavera. Oltre ai tipici mercatini di Praga, il paese dà il benvenuto alla bella stagione con i concerti di Pasqua, le anteprime di musei e gallerie e altri interessanti appuntamenti.

Le celebrazioni dedicate all’arrivo della primavera e della Pasqua sono ormai un appuntamento fisso del calendario di eventi di Praga. Uova dipinte a mano, il simbolo più caratteristico della Pasqua ceca, ghirlande colorate e una vasta scelta di artigianato comprendente giocattoli di legno, cristalli, e bambole in costumi regionali, sono gli ingredienti più tradizionali dei mercatini di Pasqua, allietati dall’atmosfera gioiosa della musica folkloristica.

Exhibition of The National museum
An exhibition introducing the mysterious world of caves and the efforts of Czech speleologists in discovering it.

The Macocha Abyss, the Punkva Caves or the Koněpruské Caves – those are names known to a vast majority of you and popular destinations of school and family trips of all generations, as well as attractions for foreign visitors. This is the general idea coming to people ´s minds when the word “cave” is mentioned.

But there are few people who know that in addition to the caves open to the public there are more than 3,000 other caves and abysses in Czech Republic.

And hardly anybody even suspects that every weekend hundreds of volunteers investigate these caves, document them and try to find the way to their still unknown and unexplored sections.

The exhibition – “Come along to the cave – tries to present to the wide general public the attractive world of the inaccessible caves and the ways of their discovery. In this way it aims at showing the efforts of Czech speleologists, the methods and results of their work, especially in the recent three decades, not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad, where many dozen kilometres of new, often unique underground spaces have been discovered.

The exhibition is held on the occasion of 40th anniversary of the discovery of the largest cave of the Czech Republic – the Amateur Cave – and 30th anniversary of foundation of the Czech Speleological Society. At the same time the exhibition has been conceived as an associated event to the project entitled “The Story of the Planet Earth” prepared by the National Museum.

I mercatini di Natale di Praga 28.11.2009 - 3.1.2010

Il Natale e uno dei periodi piu suggestivi per visitare la Repubblica Ceca: le strade delle citta si riempiono di luci, colori e decorazioni e le piazze si animano di mercatini. Le tradizioni natalizie della Repubblica Ceca rivivono nei musei open-air e nelle scene della nativita. Nei castelli, nelle sale da concerto e nelle chiese riecheggia la musica dell’avvento e del Natale.

Il Natale inizia con San Nicola
Questa particolare figura visita ogni bambino accompagnato da un angelo e da un demone portando loro in dono caramelle e dolcetti.
Se vi troverete a camminare per le strade di Praga la sera del 5 dicembre, potreste imbattervi in un gruppo di strani personaggi. San Nicola, L'Angelo e il Diavolo se ne vanno in giro e chiedono ai bambini se si sono comportati bene nel corso dell'anno appena trascorso e li ricompensano con dei piccoli doni.

I mercatini di Natale
Mercatini di Natale sono ormai diventati una componente importante del clima natalizio, con le loro bancarelle sotto tendoni colorati, il profumo del vin brulé e le mercanzie rutilanti da paese dei balocchi. I visitatori arrivano da ogni dove per vedere e godersi i mercatini di Natale a Praga (vánoční trhy). I mercatini offrono non solo la possibilita di acquistare oggetti di artigianato e dolci, ma anche occasioni uniche per gli amanti della musica, grazie ai numerosi concerti nelle chiese, nei palazzi storici e anche nelle piazze. I caffe richiamano nel loro tepore il turista e lo invitano ad assaporare la gustosa pasticceria sorseggiando una fumante tazza di cioccolata. Dopo il tramonto, i mercati sono magnificamente illuminati.
Dal 28 novembre 2009 al 3 gennaio 2010 si terranno i tradizionali mercatini di Natale di Praga.
I mercatini piu famosi sono quelli che si trovano sulla piazza della Citta Vecchia e su Piazza Venceslao, dove si vendono articoli natalizi su piu di 70 bancarelle. In questa zona si trovano anche altri mercatini piu piccoli ad Havelské tržiště e a Náměstí Republiky. Un mercatino si trova anche a Náměstí Míru, un poco piu fuori dal centro, ma facilmente raggiungibile con il tram o la metro. Un mercatino di Natale speciale viene allestito anche nell'area della fiera a Praga 7.

Piazza della Citta Vecchia (Staroměstské náměstí)
Questo e il mercatino piu carino. Delle piccole bancarelle sono accoccolate attorno alla statua di Jan Hus e circondate da secoli d'architettura gotica, rinascimentale e barocca. Il mercato e dominato da un bellissimo albero di Natale adornato da centinaia di luci che vengono accese ogni sera al tramonto (solitamente attorno alle 17). Un palco viene allestito ogni anno e qui si organizzano concerti natalizi e brevi opere teatrali all'aperto.

Questo mercatino viene allestito in una delle piazze del mercato piu vecchie di Praga ed e stata inaugurata nel 1232. Il mercato Havel si trova sulla via che collega la Piazza della Citta Vecchia a Piazza Venceslao.
Piazza della Repubblica (Náměstí Republiky)
Mercatino di Natale situato nelle vicinanze dei grandi magazzini Kotva a pochi passi dalla Piazza della Citta Vecchia.
Piazza della Pace (Náměstí Míru)
Un mercatino carino situato di fronte all'imponente chiesa di Santa Ludmilla sulla piacevole Náměstí Míru a Praga 2. Il mercatino e molto meno frequentato di quelli nel centro ed e visitato quasi esclusivamente da cechi. Saltuariamente si organizzano anche delle esibizioni musicali.

Il "mercatino di Natale alla fiera" a Praga 7 sara accompagnato da un programma, una mostra di oggetti giganti del museo dei record e delle curiosita ed altro ancora.

Presso le bancarelle adornate con le tipiche decorazioni natalizie si possono acquistare innumerevoli regali: dalle candele profumate ai dolcetti di pan di zenzero, dai cappelli di lana ai giocattoli di legno e i tradizionali oggetti in vetro e cristallo di Boemia. La visita dei mercatini potra essere anche l’occasione per provare alcune specialita come: il punch caldo, il trdlo tradizionale pane dolce della Boemia, le salsicce grigliate… In Piazza della Citta Vecchia, invece il grande albero di Natale illuminera il presepe realizzato con veri animali. La ricerca del regalo ideale per i nostri cari puo continuare nelle due piu famose vie dello shopping della citta: Na Příkopech e Pařížská.

Musica di Natale e dell’Avvento
La musica classica ceca e parte integrante del patrimonio mondiale culturale e non c’e migliore occasione del Natale per assistere a concerti speciali in sale dedicate, mercati, chiese, castelli e fortezze. La sinfonia piu suonata in questo periodo e la Messa di Natale della Repubblica Ceca chiamata Hej mistře, vstaň bystře e composta da Jakub Jan Ryba alla fine del XVIII secolo.

Come potrebbe essere Natale senza carpe o biscottini?
I preparativi al Natale, iniziano generalmente molte settimane prima: dalla pulizia della casa alla preparazione dei biscotti tutto deve essere pronto per la sera e la cena della vigilia. Il menu delle feste inizia tradizionalmente con la zuppa di pesce (o di patate) alla quale segue la portata principale a base di carpa fritta con insalata di patate. Molti cechi mangiano carpe solamente una volta all’anno a Natale per onorare la tradizione.
I biscotti di Natale sono un’altro prodotto tipico della Repubblica Ceca per questo periodo. Preparati con largo anticipo, questi biscottini si mantengono morbidi e fragranti per molto tempo.

Con Topolino e Minnie come padroni di casa, gli spettatori assisteranno a numeri di pattinaggio in coppia (da restare senza fiato), assoli toccanti e pezzi coreografici travolgenti realizzati dal coreografo Sarah Kawahara, vincitore dell'Emmy® Award.

Costumi e scenografia per un cast di 60 personaggi davvero speciali, una vera e propria sfida per Scott Lane, che ha curato la realizzazione dei costumi. Le forme bellissime dalla Banda di Topolino alle bambole di “it’s a small world”, fino alle stelle di Mulan e Disney/Pixar’s Alla Ricerca di Nemo. I colori brillanti e la linea leggera dei costumi di Nemo permettono agli artisti di muoversi liberamente per imitare il movimento naturale nell'acqua. In quella che potrebbe essere definita come un'apparizione in costume di personaggi speciali, Bob Mackie presta il suo talento ad un abito da sera rosso in paillettes indossato da Minnie. Il tutto, naturalmente, comprende il tipico fiocchetto.

Lo scenografo David Potts, che ha collaborato in diverse produzioni di Broadway, riesce a creare un’atmosfera da teatro su ghiaccio. Gli artisti si muovono e ravvivano la sequenza di “it's a small world” in mezzo a galleggianti luccicanti che si trasformano in una parata di luci splendenti; suggestive poi la neve e la valanga che travolge la scena della battaglia di Mulan contro i barbari, mentre divertente è il regalo gigante dal quale fuoriesce Buzz Lightyear la prima volta che viene presentato al simpatico cowboy Woody ed al suo amico Jessie. Sono già aperte le prevendite, presso gli abituali circuiti.
